Healthy ventilation, safe stalls, and smart layouts, built start to finish by a
local Eastern Iowa crew that listens to horse people.
Horse Stables Designed
Around the Horses
A good stable is designed from the horse outward: air that stays fresh without drafts at stall level, footing and surfaces that are safe to kick and chew, aisles wide enough to handle a spooked animal, and storage that keeps hay dry and away from moisture. Get those right and the building takes care of your horses for decades.
Premier Buildings constructs horse stables and barns across Eastern Iowa using engineered post frame construction, which is ideally suited to stable design: clear span interiors for aisles and arenas, tall sidewalls for airflow, and column spacing that matches stall layouts naturally.
Every stable project starts with a conversation about your horses, your routine, and your plans, because a two horse private barn and a twelve stall boarding operation are very different buildings. From there, our own crew builds the whole project start to finish.
Why Eastern Iowa Families Choose Premier Buildings
Horse owners can spot a barn built by people who do not know horses: latches a lip can open, gaps a hoof can find, and ventilation designed for a machine shed. We build stables with horse safe details throughout and we sweat the airflow design, because respiratory health is the quiet measure of a good barn.
NO MIDDLEMAN
Your stable is quoted, scheduled, and built by Premier Buildings directly, start to finish.
Horse Safe Details
Smooth surfaces, protected edges, kick rated stall walls, and hardware horses cannot defeat.
BUILT FOR IOWA
Column embedment, truss spacing, and uplift connections specified for Eastern Iowa wind and snow.
How We Build Differently
Stables fail their horses through details invisible at the open house: stale air, damp hay, unsafe edges.
These are the details we build differently.
Ventilation Before Everything
Ridge vents, eave intakes, and wall openings are designed as a system that moves moist, ammonia laden air up and out year round without putting a draft across a stall. In winter, this matters more, not less.
Stalls Built to Take It
Full thickness kick walls, smooth hardware, rounded edges, and doors and latches chosen for safety first. Stall fronts and partitions are laid out on the building's column grid so the structure and the stalls reinforce each other.
Dry Hay, Dry Bedding
Hay and bedding storage is separated and ventilated, with vapor barrier detailing under roof steel so condensation never rains on your forage.
From The National Association Of Home Builders:
The clear span interiors and high sidewalls achievable with post frame construction support the open air volumes and ventilation paths that equine facilities require, a design flexibility the National Frame Building Association cites among the system's primary agricultural advantages.
A Complete Stable, Not a Shell
A Premier Buildings stable is quoted as a working barn, ready for horses, not a shell with the horse parts left to you.

Stable Configurations We Build
Most stable projects start from one of these three configurations and adjust from there.
Private Barns
Two to six stalls with tack room, wash bay, and hay storage, sized for a family's own horses.
Boarding Stables
Center aisle barns of eight stalls and up, designed for daily chore efficiency and safe traffic flow.
Stables With Arenas
Stall wings attached to clear span indoor arenas, so winter riding happens under one roof.
Planning for the Herd You Will Have
Stables fill up. We talk honestly during design about future stalls, arena additions, and storage growth,
because framing for the future now costs a fraction of expanding later.
FAQs
Common Questions About Building With Premier Buildings
What stall size do you recommend?
Twelve by twelve is the standard for full size horses, with larger foaling stalls where needed. Aisles should be at least twelve feet for safe handling. We adjust all of it around your horses and routine.
How do you keep the barn from getting damp and smelly?
Designed ventilation. Ridge vents and eave intakes move air continuously, and the building is detailed so moisture exits rather than condensing. It is the single biggest difference between our barns and converted sheds.
Can you build an attached indoor arena?
Yes. Clear span post frame construction is the standard way indoor arenas are built, and attaching one to the stall wing keeps winter riding and chores under one roof.
Do you insulate horse barns?
Usually we insulate the roof to control condensation and leave the barn itself ventilated rather than sealed, which is healthier for horses. Tack rooms, wash bays, and offices can be fully insulated and heated.
Can the barn match our house and other buildings?
Yes. Colors, rooflines, and trim can be matched across the property, and plenty of our clients want the barn to be the best looking building on the place.
